Last night, the Charter Committee formally announced the election of Colin Groth as the next President of the oldest, active, independent party in the country.  Mike Goldman, past president [2003-2009], led the organization during the presidential search process until a new President worthy of this storied and vital organization was found.  Charter would like to thank Mike Goldman who stepped down yesterday as Convener for his leadership and dedication that has been crucial to vitality of the party.

During his acceptance speech, Mr. Groth stated, “At this critical juncture in our community’s history we must hold our Charter principles more than ever: Independence, Accountability, Transparency, Fiscal Responsibility, and Regional Cooperation.  As President of Charter I’d like us to consider adding an additional principle to the mix: Innovation.”

He went on to say, “At times in the past, Charter has relied too much on its Councilmembers to carry out these principles.  But, we collectively, all of us in this room are Charter.  We must work together as an organization, as a group to ensure these important principles are upheld.”

Colin Groth currently serves as the Director of Strategic Assistance at StriveTogether, a subsidiary of Knowledge Works.  The national education consortium based in Cincinnati works with communities around the country to improve student outcomes. Mr. Groth also serves on the Board of Findlay Market and worked at SORTA for over 6 years.

Creative Sustainability is the kind of "Innovation" I want to see from you, Dear Mr. Groth, if my grandchildren are going to have a decent planet around when they start making their own families. Because if we don't start honoring what's left of healthy nature here NOW, by creating a sustainable energy transport here (like The STREETCAR for instance)--to go in the direction of 'Light Rail' that works so well ALREADY in U.S., Canadian and European cities--why, we'll just be losing out to the limited disrupters, who forgot to read the writing of the geo-climate-scientists on the wall of our Mother Earth cave. Do you read me? PLEASE don't listen to the short-term players who will dis-employ our business and job seekers waiting in the wings! You can honor the good works of Charterites by promoting what's good for All! My great grand-children-to-be are waiting in the wings. Hey! You know about the butterfly-wings that send out a delicate signal to the great winds of chance? Let us not wait up for all to wake up to reality: Help Us Help Our Cincinnati to sincerely Save Our Streetcar! Follow the message of the Earth Charter! Look it up.

Hi Mira,

Prior to working at KnowledgeWorks and joining the Charter Board, I spent a number of years working a Metro. I spent five years working specifically on the streetcar project. I hope you saw the opinion piece that appeared in the Enquirer this morning from Charter: http://news.cincinnati.com/article/20131216/EDIT02/312160051/OPINION-Finishing-streetcar-could-bring-long-term-benefits-city.

The streetcar project has been contentious since its inception, but our hope is that the independent review will confirm what many of us believe and that the review is an opportunity to build consensus from public and private partners on a solution-oriented approach to this critical issue.

Once we get this issue, my hope is we can use it as a springboard to reopen the larger conversation around a regional transit system that was shot down in 2002.

Thanks for your comments,

Colin
