Charter Committee Opposes Dennison Hotel Demolition
The Charter Committee approved the following Motion by a 24-0 Vote with 1 Abstention.
“The Charter Committee Board affirms the opinion of the City's Urban Conservator in opposing the demolition of the Dennison Hotel, and urges the Historic Conservation Board to deny Columbia REI's application for a Certificate of Appropriateness for said demolition. The Urban Conservator is appointed by the City Manager as a part of city staff, and ignoring her opinion not only undermines the historic integrity of our urban core which she and the Historic Conservation Board are charged to protect, but also the professional management of the City as established by the Charter.”
Charter feels very strongly that the opinions of paid Professional City Staff should have significant weight on important City Issues. The Dennison Hotel is a historically and architecturally significant Resource that can play a significant role in the future development of our Urban Core.
Any decision to move forward with demolition tomorrow, in direct contradiction to the opinion of the City’s Urban Conservator, is highly misguided and is Bad Government.
